January 8, 2007: A Date to Remember

January 8, 2007 is a day that will someday be celebrated as the most wonderful of all time, for two reasons:

My January 8 eight-week e-course on getting published in magazines will be the last one offered at $198 for the Premium version and $99 for the Basic (no e-mail support) version. After that I’ll be [...]

You ask, we answer: Best book for book proposal writing

Victoria writes: “I have a pretty simple question - what do you guys recommend as the best book for info about writing a non-fiction book proposal? There are so many out there, it is hard to know which one to spend your money on and to use as a formal guide while constructing your proposal.”
Good [...]

Cheers!

Today Lifehacker linked to an article in the New York Times about e-mail sign-offs — you know, those words and phrases like “Sincerely” and “Best regards” that we use to close e-mail messages. The article suggested that “Best” is a brush-off. Many Lifehacker commenters feel that “Cheers” is cheesy. “xoxo” was deemed inappropriate.
I use “Cheers” [...]

Looking for interesting office supplies?

A couple months ago, my writing buddy Beth sent me some cool tabbed folders from Punch Studio. I *love* them and looked around at local office supply stores for more, to no avail. This morning, I met my friend Deb for tea/hot chocolate (and contraband Dunkin’ Donuts!) and she gifted me with yet another set [...]

If you’re like us, you use e-mail to communicate with your editors 90% of the time. But it can be hard to know how to present a professional image when no one seems to agree on the rules for e-mail. Are smileys okay? How long should a sig line be? How quickly do you need [...]

Writing Opportunity: More Chicken Soup Books

Here’s a call for submissions by the Chicken Soup people. Although I have co-authored two Chicken Soup books, I have nothing to do with these particular books, so I can’t answer any questions about them.
Good luck!

You read the query — now read the article!

In our new book The Renegade Writer’s Query Letters That Rock, Diana and I included a fabulous query by writer Andy Meisler. Based on that query, Andy sold a profile of blues DJ Ann the Raven to the LA Times Magazine. The profile was recently published, and it’s amazing. You can read it here; you [...]

Renegade Writer Q&A: Tom Weede

Tom Weede is the author of the soon-to-be-published The Entrepreneur Diet, which gives great advice on how time-strapped entrepreneurs (and freelancers!) can get fit, beat stress, and work better. (Believe it or not, research shows that people who exercise tend to be more productive at work.) [lf]
Can you tell us a little about your new [...]
