End-of-the-summer craziness

Just wanted to pop my head out of the water and say sorry for not posting as much. Life has been kind of crazy these past few weeks, starting with a major screwup while we were updating this blog that left my own writing site homeless and crippled. (I’m still trying to figure out how to fix it, harrumph.) My son is starting kindergarten in a few weeks and the summer program he’s in ends this week. And guess what? I have a ton of work due between now and early September. I’m not complaining, but it means focusing on what absolutely has to get done over the next couple weeks, and completing those paying assignments has to come first.

Just a couple of random things:

– I’ve been looking for a personal assistant to help me with some work projects and came across this interesting site called DoMyStuff. You post the details of the job you want completed — transcribing, dog walking, typing, etc. — and people bid on your work. It sort of reminds me of RentACoder. Haven’t tried it yet, though. Anyone here have?

– I also thought this website was cool — RememberTheMilk. You can set up your to-do list by categories, and even better, it works with Google Calendar, which I use fairly extensively.  I’m still playing with it, but so far, so good.

– Anyone here on Facebook? I just started using it. I’m not quite sure why it’s so addictive. Can someone explain please? And feel free to look me up and add me as your friend.  [db]

I haven’t used DoMYStuff, but it sounds pretty darn nifty. I also haven’t tried RememberTheMilk, but I have been using http://tadalist.com/ for the past few months and enjoy it quite a lot.

    I’m also on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=666925531

Diana, I just wanted to chime in and say that *my* son is starting kindergarten Sept. 4, and his day camp ends this week, too! Not exactly sure what I’m going to do next week (I think do some sharing of care with my sister in law who lives next door).

Over Labor Day and in mid-September I am going on two weekend trips (one for fun, one for work). By September 28, I have due one 1,000-word shelter story for a local mag, one 400-word labor-intensive piece for a national mag, and several corporate clients’ little bits of work.

And I’ll be transitioning my shy son into a new school (read: I’m prepping for tears, on both our parts). Also really want to start a 3x/weekly exercise class in Sept. (after all, I need some treat to celebrate both my kids in school full time now — the freedom!). Oh, and I’m having a yard sale this weekend. And soccer, dance class and theater program start up for my daughter. AAAAH! I’ve got to make a list.

I *LOVE* Remember The Milk, along with Google Calendar integration, I can also access it from my cellphone, so I can add stuff anywhere!

Diana, I find LinkedIn very useful for networking. And I love http://www.backpackit.com — I’ve created a pretty thorough running to-do list using it, divided up by project. Some days if I didn’t
have that list, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

Oh, I understand what Facebook/Linkbook/Myspace *is*. It’s why they’re addictive that has me curious. Do people like spending hours updating their music, list of books, or checking on friends who are on there?

I’m right there with you, Diana. I don’t understand what’s so fascinating about of navigating poorly designed, head ache inducing pages filled with one-way conversations between people telling each other “u r so hot!!1!!” and “dude, I was soooooooo drunk!!”, especially when those pages don’t seem to even work half the time.

i second the backpackit comment. i use it when i have long lists. there’s also a to do list plugin for your customized google homepage, but it doesn’t use due dates.

    Weird bit of synchronicity here…

‘Bout the same time I posted my previous comments, I subscribed to some techie blogs. Well, turns out a lot of those techies are Facebook fanatics, so I’ve been deluged with posts about the wonders o’ Facebookery.

Anyway, some of the posts actually made me second guess my anti-allsocialnetworks stance. I, too, plan on using the thing a little more regularly, starting with the steps in this person’s post:

Thanks for the direction to backpackit.com. I learn so much on therenegadewriter’s blog and this latest organization tool is so cool! I checked out Remember The Milk too. Here I was shuffling through my hand written pages of to-do lists….now I am just going to put it all online!
