You Ask, We Answer: Can I list these credits?

Rachel asks: I’ve had much luck freelancing this year. When I’m pitching, I have no problems listing magazines where the article has yet to come out. But…what about my professional website or online writer’s listing services? For example, Media Bistro asks to list the media clients you’ve received assignments from. Do I wait until the pub has hit the stands, even if I’ve already finished the work and turned it in?

I think it’s fine to list magazines you have written for even if the articles haven’t been published yet, both on your website and on professional sites. I’ve done it myself. The only thing to be careful of is to not give away too much info about the articles you wrote…your editors would probably not be too thrilled if editors at competing magazines had a glimpse inside their future issues!

Personally, I would wait until I got paid for the article just in case it gets killed or something (because then that credit wouldn’t count… or would it?).

Hmm… Susan has a point. This happened to me. I had a story cut at the last minute AFTER I’d “advertised” it. How embarrassing!
