Kudos for Elaine Grant’s E-Course
Our next session of e-courses is starting in late April/early May, and I wanted to share these kudos for Elaine Grant’s course Magazine Writing Basics:
I loved the Magazine Writing Basics course. I learned a lot even though I took a Writing & Editing course through a university a couple years ago and a few of my magazine articles have been published. I needed reminding about some of the basics, but much of the information, tips and resources provided in the Magazine Writing Basics course were new to me and very helpful. My favorite part of the course was receiving Eliane’s personal assessment and advice. When I started the class, I was in the midst of writing an article that had no heart. Elaine helped me see where the trouble lay and her suggestions for improvement helped turn my article into something I’ll be proud to submit to the editor. Thank you, Elaine! — Karen Giles-Smith
Elaine’s lessons are concise, easy to understand, and full of superb resources. I feel that I got a lot of information for the money. Also, her feedback is right on the mark in terms of being practical and useful. Elaine is supportive and encouraging and at the same time asks questions or gives suggestions that help you better hone your ideas for a particular audience or market. —Theresa Proenza
Elaine was very encouraging and helped me get focused on the direction my article needed to go. The course material was superb, and the research resources she pointed out were invaluable.—Carolyn Erickson

this course looks great–but so does Linda’s course, which starts on the same day. I’m having trouble discerning which one would be better for me and what the differences are exactly. Elaine’s FAQ hints at assignments, but I’m not sure what kind they are and how intensive, and I’m not sure if Linda’s course has assignments or not. I’m doing a lot of commercial freelancing right now, but I’d love to break into article writing, so any clarification on the differences between these two very appealing courses would be most welcome! Thanks so much!

My course also has assignments.
My course is about breaking into magazines — that is, writing a query letter — and Elaine’s is more about what to do once you land an assignment — how to do the best interviews, how to write a compelling lede, etc.
I hope that helps!

If you want to concentrate on the research and the writing itself, my course is the place for you. I touch on marketing because it’s unavoidable, but Linda’s the marketing maven. Don’t hesitate to email either of us directly. You can reach me at elaine@appletongrant.com
