Wanna build blog traffic? Write resource posts.

For all you blog writers out there, Dustin, who blogs over at the Writer’s Technology Companion, wrote a terrific post today about how to build your blog’s traffic by writing resource posts.

He writes, “Also called ‘flagship posts’ and ‘pillar posts,’ resource posts are entries in your blog that act as resources for your readers—the kind of stuff they’ll bookmark, email to friends, post to digg and del.icio.us, and generally want to come back to again and again.”

Dustin gives some examples of what constitutes a resource post for different types of blogs. For example, our blog might want to consider posts on how to create the perfect home office or the best ways to track time. (I think I’ll be swiping those ideas for future posts! Thanks D!)

Experience tells me Dustin’s advice is spot on. Some of our most popular blog posts have been resource posts. A post on how to get magazines for free or cheap even got picked up by Lifehacker (our stats went crazy for a few days!); my post about what traveling to India taught me about writing, a twist on the resource post, also got lots of attention.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend, folks. [db]

Thanks for a great post, Diana. I’ve spent the last month wading into the blogging world’s waters. I intend to put this useful advice to work in my blog. With American Airlines charging for all checked luggage, my readers will need “packing light” advice. Also, thanks for the link to a blog chock full of advice to bloggers and writers, I’ve bookmarked it.

I’ll second Donna’s thanking you for sharing such a good post & resource. Just the topic I’ve been looking for to get more folks to my blog! (and I’d definitely like to read Donna’s suggestions on packing light!)
