E-Courses for Writers

What would you like to see on this blog?

I’ve been stepping up my posting on the blog, and I’d like to know what our readers would like to see covered. Do you want more Q&As with renegade writers? Info on querying? Motivational pieces that give you a writerly kick in the pants?

I’m very interested in serving writers through the markets wiki, the Renegade Writer e-courses, my phone mentoring for writers, my articles in Writer’s Digest, the Renegade Writer books, and my Review Copy Helper — and, of course, the blog, where Diana and I work to educate and inspire writers of all levels. I’m especially interested in personal development as it applies to writers — motivation, productivity, confidence and so on.

Please let us know what you’d like to see on the blog by posting in the Comments section, or, if you prefer your reply to be private, sending me an e-mail at lindaformichelli@gmail.com.

Thanks! [lf]

I’d like to see some stuff that breaks down ‘blogging’ - how to be a successful, and least interesting, blogger. A ‘blogging deconstructed’ so to speak.

I love inspirational stories — people who broke into their dream magazine or had success with a marketing effort or doubled their income in a year.

I’d like Starbucks instead of Dunkin’ Donuts. Popcorn around 3:00 p.m. would be nice. And casual Fridays around here would go far in boosting morale.

Deb, posts for beginners is a great idea. Check out my post from a couple of weeks ago about what supplies and equipment you need to get started as a freelancer. I’ll work on more like that.

Marta, we have a blogging class coming in January…maybe I can get the instructor to write a post or two.

Kristin, nice idea. I’ll look for freelancers who have made it big and ask them to do Q&As.

Lila, are jammies on Friday not casual enough??

Hi. I am new to the blog, but I have been wondering if you can cover online marketing skills and how writers can protect themselves against fraud. I have had many people tell me how they were so annoyed with the fact that clients did not want to sign contracts or use escrow services. Can you please go into detail how a writer can bring up the topic of writing contracts and/or escrow services with clients?

I’ve found your markets wiki very helpful. I also like to hear about new trends - things writers
can use to network, what’s ‘hot’ in the market, keeping current.
Thanks! Your blog is quite useful already!

I’d like to see more info on querying, and making the writing process more smooth!

Also, info on contracts, payment, etc. All the nuts and bolts, essentially.

    Linda,

I have been following your blog for a while now, and I have also bought the book you co-wrote with Diana Burrell. I have learned so much from you about getting started in freelancing. Here is my question I did a type of “renegade” deed, I querried a national magazine while having no clips. The editer sent back a very positive rejection letter to my query, and asked me to keep in touch and send clips. I do not want to lose this connection with the editer, is there anything I can do? I would appreciate any tips you have.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Linda, any plans to bring back the RW Makeover? I’d love to see that feature offered again.

Susan, I don’t think we’ll be doing another RW makeover. Though it was fun, it was a huge amount of work. But I’m sure we’ll come up with some other cool perks.

Sarah, I would just let the editor know that you don’t have clips yet but that you’ll brainstorm some more ideas for her and will also send clips as you get them. In the meantime, you’re sure to get clips soon, and when you do you can send them to the editor. It sounds like you’ll be able to build a great long-term relationship with this editor from the beginning of your career onwards. Good luck!

I am just happy to see more posts on the blog. In the past I was a bit disappointed there wasn’t more info coming out. I’d like some tips on how to balance it all. I have started working from home as a full time freelancer in the past several months and I find some days the house is really clean but no writing gets done. Or, I write really well for a week but the house gets pretty neglected in the process. I am getting better by setting timers and such but, I think just more tips and information on how other people do it.
And perhaps some ideas on what to do when the normal places you query or look for jobs (I’m a blogger so I spend more time looking at job boards for people looking to hire bloggers) are not producing anything. And how to make the jump from one thing into another. I’ve written for daily newspapers. Now I’ve been a daily blogger. I want to get bigger assignments and write for magazines or write a book but I’m so conditioned to the daily deadline I have an awful time thinking longer term. I would have no idea how to organize myself to write a book and keep typing away at it, even though I have some pretty decent ideas.

    Thanks, Chris!

You mentioned making the jump from one type of writing to another. We have a course coming up in January about “diversifying your way to success,” so maybe I can get the instructor to post her advice here.

And for those of you who have asked for more beginner-friendly posts, I have one coming up on Monday: A quiz to help you determine whether full-time freelancing is for you, and to help you improve in those areas where you’re weakest.
