Friday Rant

I like to work at Borders. Today, I take a cushy seat in the nearly-empty café. Soon afterwards, a tunelessly humming old man takes a seat right next to mine. And now all the seats in the café are filled so I can’t move. I’m trying to write a blog post for Monday and am having the hardest time. I wish I could post a sound file of this guy…you would go insane in seconds.

So what’s your Friday writer rant? [lf]

I’m actually getting a lot of work done today (something that didn’t happen yesterday) but I need to stop working and clean the house as I am having company tonight.

I may keep working and just make a mad dash around the house, stuffing things into closets. It’s too hard to walk away from being on a writing roll!

That the bus is always late on Friday evenings! Another good reason for me to go freelance full-time.

Well, since you asked… I have three clients with grossly overdue invoices. One is not answering my emails (he’ll be getting a phone call next week) and the other two are giving me this song-and-dance about how these things take time (since August, in fact), my check got sent back as undeliverable, etc.

You may be sorry you asked! My Friday rant is an abscessed molar that suddenly decides to go completely, painfully insane the night before you have two articles due and three interviews to conduct.

    (whimper)

Thank the gods for dentists who will (a) see an emergency case first thing in the morning, (b) respect the fact that your mouth is so painful that you can barely open it (hate those guys who go “Is this the bad one?” as they tap-tap on your bad tooth with a freaking metal stick), and (c) immediately prescribe antibiotics and pain pills.

Mine is a “sound” rant also!
There’s been some sort of mysterious off-and-on, sometimes between 1 and 4 AM, mechanical/humming-type noise around my home for the past few days (and nights). This morning (after getting up at 2:30 due to humming that woke me at 1 AM) I was working on an article that is, quite frankly, kicking my butt and is due on the editor’s desk NOW. Turns out I can edit photographs (to some extent) with annoying background noise, but I cannot do the final edit on this article. At 9, I jumped out of my chair (and nearly out of my skin), drove to the library, and plugged my laptop into the only outlet in the reading area.
Whew. Relief at last. I opened the document file.
    Then I heard it:
the sound of a woman reading to herself. In a hissing whisper. Endlessly.
    Endlessly.
    I lasted about ten minutes.

I like to work at Borders also, there is one just a few miles away from my home. Sometimes I take the local city bus out there, find a table, write for an hour, then take a stroll around the store to check out all the new titles and finally return to a table and put in another hour of typing. Of course, I always treat myself with a delicious drink (or two) from the coffee bar, before returning home.

Fortunately, I have nothing to rant about except the weather and my short story rejections, although I have not received any today.

Best of luck to every one,

    Henri

My Friday rant will actually last me the entire weekend and possibly part of next week too. I just foud out that yet another UK magazine has succumbed to the “we’ll only reply if we’re buying” mentality regarding unsolicited short story submissions. Just how long are you supposed to wait before sending it somewhere else? AND they’ve also taken to sending REGULAR writers (to them) a standard letter. Bloomin’ cheek. Oh yes, I shall be having a bit of a rant …

I do manage to zone out any unwanted sounds if I’m writing in a cafe. A bit like when I used to do homework in front of the telly.

Hahaha, I can’t believe you rickrolled us Diana! Smoothly done.

My rant, although it’s Tuesday and therefore wayyyyy overdue, is simply… I can’t seem to get going. In freelancing, that is. Everything seems to be halted right here, and I can’t seem to push the train on to the next station. Gah!

Hope everyone who had a friday rant found their solution!
