Renegade Writer Makeover Expert: Katey Coffing, Ph.D., Life Coach for Writers
Writing is a noble calling and a source of joy (and sometimes of frustration). Katey Coffing, Ph.D. is a published and award-winning author who understands the needs, fears, and dreams of the creative life. As a book coach, she helps her clients minimize the obstacles and savor all the pleasure of writing.
Katey has been a full-time, certified life coach since 2003. Her clients, primarily women working on novels and nonfiction books, praise her as a midwife for their manuscripts. She has guided writers out of years-long creative blocks. Some people say writing is like opening up a vein and pouring it onto the page; Katey helps authors avoid all the bleeding and become best friends with the muse.
Her coaching is customized for each client, though many crave focus and accountability because writers tend to be talented procrastinators. (She jokes that there’s a gene linking writing and perfectionism.) Katey destroys writer’s block and helps with plotting, brainstorming, and craft, as well as kick-ass queries, synopses and proposals, submission strategies and celebratory Happy Inky Writer’s Dances. Book coaching is about getting organized, staying creative, and getting the project DONE. It’s a full-fledged support system for the writer.
